Unit4--ReadingⅠ The shortest player in the NBA

Qingtan Middle School -- Yang Jie

Teaching objectives:

  1. Students will be able to understand the new words and phrases used in the article;

  2. Students can identify achievements, difficulties and actions in different periods of

      Spuds basketball career;

  3. Students can predict from the picture and title;

  4. Students can learn efficient reading strategies according to schema theory;

  5. Students will be aware of the good qualities that Spud proved to them;

  6. Students can learn to deal with difficulties positively and achieve success step by

      step.

    Teaching procedures:

    Pre-reading

    Step1. Watch a short video about Yao Ming

    Step2. Free talk: Talk about Yao Ming

    Step3. Introduce the background of the NBA and teach some necessary words

    Step4. Compare Spud Webb to Yao Ming, arouse students interest in Spud Webb

    Step5. Guide students to predict the content of the article from pictures and title

     

    While-reading

    Step1. Skim the text to find out whether the predictions are mentioned in the article

          and decide the correct structure of the text

    Step2. Read the first sentence of each paragraph and get to know the main idea of

          each part

    Step3. Match exercise: choose the correct information for each paragraph and get the

          main idea of the whole article

    Step4. Read para.1 -- What is his big dream?

          Read para.5 -- Did Spud realize his dream at last? When did he join the NBA?

          Read para. 2-4 -- What are the three periods between them?

    Step5. Choose the right achievement for each period

    Step6. Think: What does this picture look like? Can he achieve his success in only

          one day?

    Step7. Read para.2-5, fill in the table which is related to the difficulties and actions

          in different periods

    Step8. Read para.6 -- Why could he achieve success at last?

     

    Post-reading

    Step1. Watch a short video about Spuds performance in the Slam Dunk Contest

    Step2. Role play: play as the sports announcers

    Step3. Further thinking: What makes a person successful?

    Step4. Give useful suggestions

     

    Homework

    Write a recommendation letter for Spud Webb
